Within the last two years, there’s been a lot of chatter among the boxing and MMA over the fantasy match-up of Floyd Mayweather taking on Ronda Rousey. Apparently, most people – either fan base, sports personalities, and media – side with Rousey. This includes UFC president Dana White and commentator Joe Rogan. Even Rousey at times stokes the fires of the fantasy match, throwing verbal jabs at Mayweather, especially at the ESPY awards.
Now, another popular figure is giving their two cents in the Floyd Mayweather vs. Ronda Rousey fantasy match: famed boxer Victor Ortiz. What is unique is the fact Ortiz is not siding with his fellow boxer in the matter, claiming “Money” has no chance against “Rowdy.”
According to MMA News, the former WBC welterweight champion made what is reported as the most obvious statement about the fantasy rivalry. That is Floyd Mayweather has no shot against Ronda Rousey in the Octagon, while Rousey has no business being in the ring with Mayweather.
“That’s a different world [for Mayweather]. A boxer can’t step into an Octagon and do boxing things to them. And if it is, it’s probably minimal.”
“To think that Floyd has a chance in a UFC [fight], against Ronda, no. But it’s also the other way around, if you put a UFC fighter strictly boxing for 12 rounds, it’s different. It’s just you can’t compare the two sports, I don’t think.”
Victor Ortiz’s statement above is quite obvious. However, it seems to escape a lot of people when asked the fantasy match question of “who would win.”
It should be noted that Victor Ortiz not taking a clear-cut side for Ronda Rousey is quite amazing given the fact there is a bit of history between him and Floyd Mayweather, as reported by Washington Post. Back when Ortiz and Mayweather fought, there was a bit of controversy pertaining to how Mayweather won in which he pounced a not-ready Ortiz, as shown in the video below.
Ergo, it is nice that Victor Ortiz is willing to stand honestly by facts than to simply defend his own sport. MMA and boxing contrast different as combat sports, therefore they should be treated as such.
