A second straight defeat to a lower-ranked opponent will certainly set off a major overhaul of the USA program. Saturday’s game will be a rematch of the Group A finale, which saw Panama hold the Americans to a frustrating 1-1 draw on July 13.

Panama ended up in the third-place game thanks to a controversial penalty kick call that gave Mexico a 2-1 victory in the semifinal game between the two countries immediately following the crushing 2-1 USA loss to Jamaica.
“Obviously the team is disappointed. The fans are disappointed,” said Klinsmann after Wednesday’s shocking defeat. “We wanted to play in the big final Sunday.”
But the team not only wanted to play in the final, USA soccer fans as well as experts expected the team to advance to what would have been the sixth consecutive Gold Cup final, reasserting the dominance over the tournament that the USA shares with Mexico.
While third-place matches often seem like a grind for teams in big tournaments, the USA should be able to find plenty of motivation, to prove that the loss to Jamaica was a fluke, the result mainly of bad luck rather than of a tangible decline in the team’s development.
Goalkeeper Brad Guzan made at least one major mistake that led directly to what proved to be the winning Jamaica goal. But by the team World Cup qualifiers, which begin next year, senior keeper Tim Howard plans to be back with the team following a year-long break.
