Forced Adoptions: ‘Adopted Or Abducted’ Special

On Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 8 ET, Dan Rather Reports will air a 1-hour special, Adopted or Abducted? on HDNet which will discuss the long-term effects of the “baby scoop era” on young women who were pressured into giving up their newborns against their will.

Since last October, Dan Rather Reports has interviewed nearly one-hundred women (out of more than an estimated 1.5 million), who claim to have been lied to and coerced into putting their out-of-wedlock children up for adoption. In the 60’s, 70’s, and even 80’s, unwed pregnancy was seen as a disgrace and young mothers were often pressured by their parents and church to hide their pregnancy and were sent off to maternity homes where they would have their baby and subsequently release it to a given adoption agency. Rather spoke with one woman, Claudia D’Arcy:

“Adoption was supposed to be this one thing that happened that was going to allow me to continue on my life as if I did not have a baby. And yet, 25 years later, I’m sitting here talking to you because this has been the single most life altering thing that has ever happened to me and has changed the course of my entire life. And not just for me, but for my other children, for my husband, for family members. The ripples and the effect on everybody, and yet they don’t tell you that.”

In 1987, D’Arcy spent the last month of her pregnancy in a Boston Maternity home, and signed papers to release her son “Max” to an adoption agency just two days after he was born.

“People need to realize that adoption is not warm and fuzzy. Adoption is supposed to be about finding homes for children that need it, not finding children for parents that want them.”

D’Arcy and “Max” were happily reunited 20 years later, in 2007.
