Bryan Singer Teases ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Photo In Destroyed Cairo; Could Storm’s Origins Could Be Shown In New Flick?

X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer posted a photo last night of a destroyed Cairo, Egypt, leaving many to wonder if Storm’s origins will be at least touched on in the new X-Men film, due out next year. Singer posted the image to Instagram, saying he was “tip toeing through ruined #cairo #1983 #xmen #apocalypse”. The director has been a longtime advocate for teasing images from the various sets of the films he works on, a decision which has given fans much to anticipate.

Cairo is the city where Ororo Munroe – aka Storm – and her parents fall victim to an airplane attack gone awry during the Suez Crisis, killing her parents instantly and leaving her trapped. Fans of the character are wondering, given that the story takes place a decade after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, whether the accident that claims Storm’s parents could be a part of the storyline. It’s widely suspected that the image that Singer teased of a ruined Cairo could lead to the first reveal of Apocalypse, the film’s titular villain.

The Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse is more brooding and punk than Halle Berry’s take on the character. Alexandra Shipp is taking on the role for this X-Men cinematic turn, and with it, audiences will see Storm with a mohawk. If the images that have been posted so far are any indication, this Storm is also far more intense than versions of the character that audiences have previously witnessed.

In previous interviews, Singer noted that the characters featured in X-Men: Apocalypse, which include a young Scott Summers and a young Jean Grey, are not quite the much-beloved leaders and X-Men that audiences had grown familiar with in the X-Men films of the 1990s and early 2000s. In an Entertainment Weekly article featuring the film, Alexandra Shipp, who plays Storm, and Olivia Munn, who plays Psylocke, are both pictured with the titular Apocalypse, portrayed by Oscar Isaac. One can only assume that perhaps Storm is not quite on the good guys’ side – at least, not at this point in the story.

Singer had also cautioned fans that these beloved mutants would be “very different” at this point. From the expression on Shipp’s Storm’s face, it seems as though the gentle, optimistic Storm from the previous X-Men films is not there in X-Men: Apocalypse – at least, not yet. Given the character’s history, it will be interesting for fans of both the character and the X-Men films as a whole to see what ultimately happens in X-Men: Apocalypse.
