WWE Rumors: Main Event Star Being Demoted — Not Seen As Top Level Talent, May Not Even Be At ‘SummerSlam’

One of the biggest and hottest feuds over the past couple of months has been that of John Cena versus former NXT champion Kevin Owens. At WWE Battleground, they had yet another excellent match and John Cena held onto his United States title, but now the champ is moving on. As for Owens? Rumor has it that he’s actually being demoted and may not even be a part of SummerSlam at all.

A lot of attention has been given to the fact that not only did Owens lose to Cena again, but he tapped out.

Owens tapping out to Cena wouldn’t normally be seen as a horrible thing, but it was kind of shocking. The next night on Monday Night Raw brought about a complete and total end to their feud as well.

That night, Cena ended up moving onto a feud with Seth Rollins and it looks like there could be a champ vs. champ feud heading to SummerSlam. Not only was Owens out of the picture, but he was also nowhere to be seen until the main event.

At that point, he walked out halfway through and not much mention was made of it. Why did this happen?

According to WrestleZone, Owens is no longer being seen as a “main event” talent and has essentially been demoted. WWE is looking at him as an “upper mid-card” position, and not in a prime spot to be on the level of John Cena, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, and others.

Instead, Owens is being seen on the same level as Rusev, Cesaro, and Dolph Ziggler. While that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does appear now that WWE isn’t looking at him as someone who can run with the big dogs.

Original plans had been for Owens to win the United States title from John Cena at Battleground or at SummerSlam. The way things are going, Owens may not make it on the card for SummerSlam at all.

Some could see that as a demotion, but Owens is scheduled for the NXT Takeover: Brooklyn event the night before. He will be in the main event and fighting Finn Balor for the NXT Championship. It’s possible that WWE may not want him pulling that kind of double duty just yet.

No matter what the case may be, it was odd the way Kevin Owens was just dropped from the scene after the tap out loss to John Cena. Will he be in a match at SummerSlam? Only time will tell if he really was demoted from the main event level and had to take a step down.
