California Earthquake: 4.0 Earthquake Jolts People From Their Slumber, Several Aftershocks Reported
Citizens of several cities across California were awakened by the jolt of an earthquake which struck the town in the early hours of July 21, 2015. According to initial reports, the earthquake measured 4.0 on the Richter Scale. Following the primary earthquake, several other aftershocks were also reported from the area. The US Geological Survey later confirmed that the initial earthquake, which struck at 2:41 a.m. local time, measured 3.98 on the Richter Scale. Two aftershocks measuring 2.6 and 2.7 on the Richter Scale were recorded about an hour later. There were a total of eight aftershocks following the main earthquake – as of 3:27 a.m. SF Gate reports.
The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be located 3km (2mi) NorthEast of the town of Fremont, California. Other regions close to the epicenter include Union City, Newark, Pleasanton, and Sacramento.
Several people in the area were woken up by the earthquake, following which there was panic. No reports of injuries or damage to property have been reported so far. People took to Twitter to share their experiences during and after the quake. Even the Fremont Police Department posted updates pertaining to the quake.

California is the most seismically active zone in the United States. The region is known to report the maximum earthquakes every year. Last year alone, there were a total of 6,614 earthquakes in the region. The most powerful amongst them was a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that hit the area in August 2014.
