Amy Schumer Says Being A Woman In Hollywood ‘F’ing Sucks’

Amy Schumer says being a woman in Hollywood “f**king sucks,” and while we don’t blame her for thinking that given the rampant ageism and sexism that goes on in Hollywood, the question begs to be asked, what’s the origin of this statement?

In an interview with GQ, Amy Schumer promotes her film Trainwreck, and during the interview, she touches on what it’s like to be a woman who gets an enormous amount of attention in this industry. In the interview, Schumer used her signature candor and balls to the wall spirit to get her point across.

While most of the attention that’s on Schumer can be attributed to her talent, a lot of that has to do with the fact that she’s a woman saying exactly what’s on her mind in a completely unapologetic way.

Women in the media are shown as over-apologizing shrinking violets. If a woman has an opinion that’s a degree off from the norm, she’s usually raked over hot coals. If she dresses in anything flashy or chooses to show skin, it becomes a topic of body shaming. If they appear to look frumpy, they’re then expected to go to the other extreme and sexualize themselves for an audience.

Schumer seems to be well aware of these perceptions as well as women who are trotted out in the Hollywood system, only to bend over backward to appease a male-driven business.

“It f**king sucks,” said Schumer. “It’s exhausting. I’m very annoyed by all the physical stuff — the heels, the makeup, outfits, versus my male counterparts who are rolling out of bed.”

She continued, “Women are accomplishing more and more, and men are plateauing, so there are these insane expectations of how you’ll be. You really are kind of encouraged to accomplish everything, and then you get to realize, “But not too much—make everybody comfortable.”

“I truly feel like I’m getting a lot of attention right now and it’s just a ticking time bomb. Like, I wonder what the thing is going to be that will make people want to burn me at the stake. There’s no way to control it.”

While Schumer is only now starting to make her way into the limelight, she already has been targeted for her brand of humor, specifically as a host at the MTV Movie Awards. Many hit back at Schumer when she made this joke about J.Lo and Latinas.

“Gone Girl, how good was Gone Girl? Such a good movie. If you didn’t see it, it’s the story of what one crazed white woman, or all Latinas do, if you cheat on them. That’s a fact.”

There’s even a Tumblr dedicated to Schumer being racist. This is one thing Amy didn’t simply let roll of her shoulders.

The comic responded on Twitter, “I enjoy playing the girl who time to time says the dumbest thing possible, and playing with race is a thing we are not supposed to do, which is what makes it so fun for comics.”
