Steven Michael Quezada: ‘Breaking Bad’ Star Eyes Commissioner Seat

Steven Michael Quezada is eyeing a commissioner seat in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Breaking Bad actor is currently a member of the Albuquerque public school board. However, he recently set his sights on an open position with the Bernalillo County Commission — as he wants to “make a difference” in the community.

As reported by Denver Post, the actor and comedian believes the Hispanic community, in particular, is underrepresented on the current commission. A member of the New Mexico Democratic Party, Quezada said he will focus on youth outreach.

“I think I bring a new face to the Democratic Party… We need to reach out to our young people — the young Chicanos, the young Latinos — and get them involved in this process and let them know this is important.”

Another serious concern is the “Santolina” planned community, which was recently approved by the Bernalillo County Commission. As it will encompass 22 square miles, opponents are concerned the community will require massive amounts of water — which is currently in short supply.

While serving as a member of the Albuquerque public school board, Steven Michael Quezada spoke out against the commission’s decision.

Seattle Pi reports the preliminary plans do not include any schools. This is specifically troubling, as Albuquerque’s public schools are already facing issues due to overcrowding.

SouthWest Organizing Project Executive Director Javier Benavidez said that “irresponsible development” is a detriment to the entire community. He applauded Steven Michael Quezada’s decision to run for commissioner, as he is committed to making positive changes.

“We need leaders who are going to commit to responsible growth and not just recruit new Wal-Marts and chain restaurants.”

In addition to his political involvement, Quezada is a critically acclaimed actor and comedian.

As reported by IMDb, Steven Michael Quezada attended Eastern New Mexico University, where he studied theater. In 1987, he began performing stand-up at comedy clubs throughout the southwest United States. He also appeared in several comedy programs on HBO, Showtime, and Que Locos.

In 2008, Quezada joined the cast of the hit series Breaking Bad. In the crime drama, the talented actor played Albuquerque DEA agent Steven “Gomie” Gomez.

Although he only appeared in 34 of 62 episodes, Quezada was a regular throughout the series’ five seasons.

Steven Michael Quezada said he will formally announce his plans to run for the commissioner seat on Tuesday.
