Richard Simmons Isn’t A Fan Of ‘The Biggest Loser’

Richard Simmons has been helping people lose weight for decades. In a recent interview with Mens Health, the 80’s icon criticized the NBC show “The Biggest Loser” for turning weight loss into a competition.

Simmons, who is still teaching classes in his dolfin shorts, said that weight loss should be a about yourself and not a new car.

Simmons said:

“I’m not into any show that makes people compete when they lose weight… Voting off people every week because they didn’t lose enough weight, or giving somebody a car or money because they did lose weight? That’s terrible…Who are you competing against? It’s you. You need to be doing this for you and only you.”

Simmons, 63, still teaches classes three days a week at Slimmons and has no plans of retiring. Simmons said:

“I’m 63. I’ll be 64 this summer. Oh (I can’t retire). I wouldn’t be able to sit still. If I have to die, I want to combust in the middle of one of my classes.”

The workout guru also talks to Mens Health about his relationship with Howard Stern, his endless supply of energy, and his astounding collection of Dolfin shorts. Simmons said that he has about 400 pairs of Dolfin shorts which he now gets from friendly fans since the shorts are no longer made.

Simmons said:

“They don’t make Dolfin shorts anymore… It’s true! I’m not lying. They’re from 1979, and they don’t make them anymore because the material is flammable. Literally flammable! They’re not allowed in the United States anymore. I’ve got 400 pairs. People write to me all the time and say, ‘Dear Richard, I was cleaning out my garage and you’re just never going to guess what I found. I’ve got two pair of Dolfin shorts!’ And they send them to me.”
