El Chapo’s beauty queen wife is now Mexico’s number one surveillance target since the drug lord’s dramatic escape from a maximum security prison, reports News Max, under the assumption that El Chapo will try to contact his wife.
On Friday, July 17, Mexican authorities who have been frantically searching for El Chapo since he escaped from prison using a long, winding tunnel, revealed they named the kingpin’s wife, Emma Coronel, as their “highest-priority surveillance target” ever since El Chapo disappeared on July 11. According to the Daily Mail, however, authorities aren’t even sure where Emma is.

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and Emma Coronel married back in 2007, immediately after the beauty queen turned 18, and their marriage was a way to unite the two largest drug cartels in Mexico, reports the Daily Mail, since the beauty queen’s uncle is one of the premiere crystal meth distributors in the world with the nickname “King of Crystal.” In 2011, the beauty queen gave birth to twin girls, bringing the number of children El Chapo has to nine.
The Daily Mail reports that “the marriage between El Chapo and Coronel was seen by many as a calculated move to bind the ties between the cartel’s central families. Coronel’s father, Inés Coronel, was the director of drug smuggling operations for the Sinaloa cartel along the Arizona section of the U.S. border with Mexico.”
While El Chapo is generally perceived as armed and dangerous, his escape has provided internet amusement since he somehow managed to get out from a maximum security prison using a one mile long tunnel, making him one of the world’s most wanted criminals. Now that authorities are trying to tail his beauty queen wife, El Chapo’s story has broken the internet.
“The cartel headed by Chapo is probably the most well-financed, vicious, criminal entity we have ever seen, with unlimited resources both to bribe, corrupt and to transport,” Deputy DEA Administrator Jack Riley said according to CNN. “So our job in this particular case, as much as it was over year ago when we captured him, is to use every legal tool we can, cooperate with our counterparts, and hit the ground. The hunt is back on.”
While there are rumors that Mexico and the United States aren’t working together, the DEA put that theory to rest.
“Chapo is hoping and planning on the fact that the good guys, the cops on both sides of the border, don’t talk to each other, don’t connect the dots,” Riley told CNN. “And I’m here to tell you we’re doing that better now than we have ever done it. And if I was him, I’d be looking over my shoulder.”
While it’s anyone’s guess where El Chapo is hiding, authorities are hoping his beauty queen wife will lead them to the most powerful drug lord in the world.
