Card In A Hot Car: Arizona Cardinal Tyrann Mathieu Climbs Into Hot Car For PETA PSA About Animal Safety [Video]

Arizona Cardinal Free Safety Tyrann Mathieu is a Card in a hot car in a new PSA for animal welfare group PETA about leaving dogs in hot cars during the summer.

Tragically, despite all the warnings, media coverage, and sad stories, some people still don’t seem to get it, and each year thousands of dogs die in hot cars because their owners ignore common sense. Tyrann Mathieu wants to help change that, so he decided to suffer through what a dog would when left in a boiling hot car — and he doesn’t last long.

When Tyrann Mathieu gets in the hot car, it’s 90 degrees outside. Within two minutes, the temperature in the car is 97 degrees.

Mathieu then gets reflective, saying, “[T]his is ultimately what is feels like, to be a dog trapped inside of a car on a hot day, while their owner is probably in a grocery store, the dog has to sit in the car and literally overheat.”

At the four-minute mark, the temperature inside the car has climbed to 105 degrees, and Tyrann is trying to cool off by fanning himself with his T-shirt, before using it to wipe sweat from his face.

“I seriously couldn’t imagine leaving my dog in a car like this. If you are going to make a dog part of your family, then make him part of your family. Don’t treat him like you wouldn’t treat someone you care about or someone you love.”

By six minutes, the temperature in the car is 113 degrees, and Tyrann is visibly weakened and sweating profusely. At eight minutes, the temp in the car is 1120 degrees, and Tyrann Mathieu can’t take it anymore. Mathieu climbs out of the car and doubles over, panting and whispering “I’m sorry, I can’t do it.”

The video then goes on to say that dogs don’t sweat (except for very minimally, through the pads on their paws), so in a 90-degree car, they have no way of cooling themselves. By 105 degrees, heat stroke can set in and a dog’s organs begin to fail.

“After 8 minutes, Tyrann was able to open the door to escape the oven-like conditions. But dogs can’t,” the video states

When you’re out and about with your pets this summer, remember the Card in a hot car, Tyrann Mathieu. If he couldn’t stand eight minutes in a 120-degree car, why would you subject your dog to that torture, even for just a minute.
