‘American Crime’s’ Second Season Of Surprises

When John Ridley’s American Crime debuted, critics called it “one of the darkest, most unconventional shows to air on a broadcast network.” It was met with critical acclaim, though the ratings weren’t as high as some other freshman shows. That didn’t stop ABC from ordering a second season of the provocative drama. After scaling the snubs to gain 10 Emmy nominations, Variety reveals American Crime is coming back for a second shocking season.

American Crime‘s debut season challenged ideas on race and class as it followed a diverse group of people linked together by a single murder in a small suburban town. American Crime‘s second season will reportedly tackle sexual identity and class warfare. Like it did in season one, American Crime‘s sophomore effort will begin with an incident, this time at an exclusive prep school, according to TV Line.

Returning from American Crime‘s first season are Emmy-nominated Timothy Hutton (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie), Felicity Huffman (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie), Richard Cabral (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie) and Regina King (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie).

As he did in season 1, John Ridley is carefully guarding the specifics of the show. Both American Crime‘s cast and audiences will share in the second season’s surprises as the cast still does not know all the details about their characters or the context in which they will meet. They do know, however, that they will be in completely different roles and situations.

Hutton admits he still hasn’t seen the script for American Crime‘s second season, but knows he will be “playing the basketball coach at the private school.”

I haven’t read anything yet, but I know that the story is going to involve an incident that happens at a high school in the same town.”

After playing a bitter racist in the first season of American Crime, Felicity Huffman will play a school headmistress.

Cabral is also in the dark about his new American Crime character.

…It’s going to be completely different. That’s all John has told me. It’s going to be kind of shocking. People are not going to recognize me. Definitely not a bad guy – no criminal element, no gang culture.”

Huffman says she’s excited about American Crime‘s second season.

“Its going to be great. John has such a different take on this and it has a different feel…”

There’s no word yet on Regina King’s role in the second season of American Crime.

Ridley, who won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, will be celebrating American Crime‘s multiple Emmy nods by prepping for season 2, according to The Wrap.

“Right after the Oscars, I went off to shoot the first season of ‘American Crime,’ and tomorrow I have to go to Texas to work on the second. But I will be going with a renewed sense of purpose.”
