2015 Emmy Nominations: The Snubs And Surprises

This morning, the 2015 Emmy award nominations were announced. In every set of nominations, we had snubs and surprises. Some years, the nomination pool is very typical, and nominations favor popular choices that are no-brainers, but this year, a lot of fresh blood were introduced, which made for some pretty surprising results.

Let’s get to the snubs and surprises:

One surprise came from Any Schumer’s nomination. This just proves that it really is her year. Between the rave reviews for her comedic film Trainwreck, and her moving her way up to being an A-list talent, now one is sleeping on Schumer (no pun), and she’s finally getting the respect she deserves as an entertainer. Schumer was nominated for Lead Actress in a comedy. Another surprise from that category is veteran actress Lily Tomlin, who got a nomination for the Netflix show Grace & Frankie.

The snub in this category went to Gina Rodriguez for Jane The Virgin. The actress nabbed the Golden Globe award for the show but failed to receive an Emmy nomination for the CW hit. What gives? Our guess is that there are more people voting in the Emmy pool, whereas there are probably 70 or so people voting for the Golden Globes. For the Emmys, it’s a less focused group.

Another actress who took home a Golden Globe but failed to see a nomination is The Affair’s Ruth Wilson. Wilson won Best Actress in a TV Drama but failed to get an Emmy nomination. Instead, that honor went to Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Claire Danes (Homeland), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

The real surprise in this category goes to Tatiana Maslany, who has received praise from critics and fans alike but hasn’t been a favorite among the awards season — until now. Another snub went to veteran actress Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife. Margulies has won this category for The Good Wife countless times, so it’s odd not to see her name included in this list.

While Taraji P. Henson is probably the favorite to win in her category, due to Empire causing major waves on television this season, the show itself failed to get a nomination for best TV drama. Her co-star Terrence Howard didn’t get Emmy love either as he was snubbed for the Lead Actor in a Drama category. Instead, the huge surprise to come out of Lead Actor in a Drama was Kyle Chandler in the new Netflix series Bloodline. Chandler joins nominees Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan).

Other snubs include Jane Fonda for Grace & Frankie, The Americans, The Mindy Project, Parenthood, Broad City, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s lead Ellie Kemper, and fan favorite The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons were all left out of the nominations.
