Over the last decade, WWE has had a lot of trouble building main-event caliber superstars, and in John Cena’s opinion, that’s why some WWE fans resent him so much. Last year, Cena appeared on the Steve Austin Show podcast, and said that the fans resented him and WWE because “for so many years, it was a one man show out there.” Well, now it appears that it’s no longer a one man show and that WWE is finally making a concentrated effort to build up new, main-event level superstars that will carry the company for the next decade.
Kevin Owens, Cesaro, and Rusev — who may end up being the ones who carry WWE for the next five to 10 years — all competed in a triple threat match during last night’s RAW, with the winner earning the right to face John Cena for the United States Championship immediately following the match. The match between the three — which was won by Rusev — ended up being one of the highlights of the night, and this morning, John Cena acknowledged the performance of the three men who were involved and called them the future of WWE.
The future of WWE is a cliche that WWE uses on television when describing the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. But the movement to find WWE’s next big star is real. Earlier this year, the push to make Roman Reigns WWE’s new top star failed, and now they’re in the process of rebuilding Reigns. Now, it looks like Kevin Owens will be WWE’s next big star on the heel side, but WWE is still lacking a new, main-event level babyface.
After the last three weeks, plenty of people have come out — including WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley — and said that Cesaro would be a great main-event babyface, and that he would make a great WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Of course, this has been common knowledge among the fans for some time now, but unfortunately it hasn’t been among WWE management.
It’s clear that WWE believes in Kevin Owens and Rusev, and now, with him receiving high-praise from John Cena, maybe they’ll start to believe in Cesaro and they’ll finally give him the opportunity to reach his full potential, which is a main-event, WWE World Heavyweight Championship contending babyface.
