343 Industries, at their San Diego Comic-Con panel last week, released a new trailer for the Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series, arousing more curiosity and excitement from Halo fans. Halo: The Fall of Reach is based on a 2001 novel by Eric Nylund of the same title, The Fall of Reach, and is a three-part series that could serve as an appetizer/tie-in series for the Halo 5: Guardians.
Halo 5: Guardians is coming to consoles this fall, and people are excited to delve into the story of Master Chief. The Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series is perfect for those who will get the game, since the Halo series will tackle the origins of the Spartan II program, Master Chief, and the Blue Team. Halo: The Fall of Reach as an origin story, some sort of prequel, is only logical then. Gamezone writes that the timeline of Halo: The Fall of Reach is situated somewhere in between Halo: Reach and the original Halo.
Executive producer Kiki Wolfkill explains at the Halo Waypoint that players will immensely benefit from watching the Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series.
"The theme of family and the bonds that exist between soldiers (and even AI) has always been intriguing for us. We left the Master Chief at the end of Halo 4 contemplating a future without Cortana. Who can the Master Chief trust? In Halo 5: Guardians, John is reunited with Blue Team, who represents a different kind of family for him--what is their bond and how was it forged? Halo: The Fall of Reach explores not just John's origin story but also that of Blue Team itself."Halo: The Fall of Reach animated series
Those who got their hands on The Fall of Reach Halo novel prior to the animated series' release will notice that the Halo: The Fall of Reach will have parts that deviate from the novel. Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor, however, explains at the Halo Waypoint that they have complex reasons from doing so.
"Without getting into the weeds, we've been careful to align with the novel where it makes sense, but in visualizing the universe—which has evolved so much in the intervening years—we were presented with a few challenges, but also a lot of opportunities. So you'll see a few differences, choices of Covenant ship, weapons and so on, but it adheres tightly to the core canon, with a few flourishes here and there to fill in gaps or smooth over previous errors."Halo: The Fall of Reach will be released on October 27, the same time Halo 5: Guardians release on Xbox One. It will be included in the Halo 5: Guardians premium versions available for Xbox One, but could also be bought separately from the Halo 5: Guardians game.
