One Direction ‘Charms’ Levi’s Stadium Without Zayn Malik

When Zayn Malik announced in March that he was leaving One Direction, it looked like the loss would be a huge one for the british boy band. Malik announced that he was leaving the group because of “stress-related issues,” and One Direction became a quartet instead of a quintet, causing some to wonder if the combo would still work.

According to the hundreds of thousands of screaming fans who’ve caught concerts on the “On The Road Again” tour, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and One Direction’s “Justin Timberlake,” Harry Styles, sound as good as ever. “The concert was so good,” tweeted fan Maddy, in excited all caps.

Vanessa McCormick said the One Direction concert was wonderful, and the band without Zayn did a great job.

Since the break up, Malik has been in the news for a Twitter fat-shaming episode connected to a new project with former producer pal Naughty Boy. After Naughty Boy, whose real name is Shahid Khan, leaked a demo of Malik’s post-One Direction solo efforts, Malik slammed Naughty Boy for “exploiting their musical partnership and sharing demos.” The Twitterverse blew up over it as fans already hurting from the One D break up watched their idol show a less attractive side.

Zayn Malik leaving isn’t the only unexpected bump in the road for One Direction. During the June 9 concert at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Harry Styles had one very embarrassing moment that could have changed the whole vibe for the band. Styles appeared to trip over his own feet and took a tumble right on stage. Harry took it in stride though, as his bandmates and the audience had a good laugh. The band is known for its casual attitude on stage, “tossing water about and goofing around like normal guys,” so a fall or two seems to fit in with their downplaying of “superstar status.”

Two days later, the June 11 concert at Santa Clara’s Levi’s stadium showed that the band is still heading in the right direction. Liam Payne took the opportunity to go front and centre with his own embarrassing on-stage moment, showing off his not-so-great breakdancing skills. He insisted before the attempt that he “doesn’t have the moves,” but fans loved it and Twitter went wild. “That moment when you thought you could break dance… good job either way,” tweeted Lorena Vasquez.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, even with on stage goof-ups and Zayn Malik’s absence, One Direction remains the “most popular boy band in the known universe.”
