Fans can watch the Mexico vs. Guatemala soccer match live online and see if El Tri can keep up the momentum from a thrashing of Cuba earlier this week in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Mexico, which came into the tournament after a lackluster performance in the Copa America, is back to full force and looking to make noise in the tournament. And El Tri has done just that, taking advantage of a short-handed Cuban squad to score a 6-0 victory in the opening match.
Mexico and Guatemala will now face off Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.
Winning the Gold Cup has been Mexico’s goal this summer. Coach Miguel Herrera sent what was referred to as a “B squad” to the Copa America tournament so the team could instead put its full focus on the Gold Cup.
Fans who watch the Mexico vs. Guatemala soccer match live online will see a Mexican squad full of steam after last week’s thrashing of Cuba. While the Cuban team suffered some unfortunate mishaps — including missing players due to visa issues and defections — Mexico played a nearly flawless game.
MLSSoccer.com noted, “Though it came against a second-rate Cuban side that was missing six players and their head coach due to visa issues and another player after he defected, Mexico’s lopsided win on Thursday no doubt gave El Tri a big-time confidence boost. Oribe Peralta, Carlos Vela and Gio dos Santos – all of whom will need to shoulder more of an offensive burden with Chicharito sidelined – all scored, with Peralta bagging a hat trick as Mexico notched an astonishing 44 shots.”
Mexico may have also found an effective new strategy in the win over Cuba. Herrera ended the match in a 4-3-3, putting on pressure with an extra attacker that led to two goals.
“Placing a third striker is an exciting prospect for Mexico, but the move could also be a hindrance to the wing-backs for the team,” noted ESPNFC.
Though many expect Mexico to win again, they are by no means taking Guatemala lightly.
“The demands will grow against Guatemala,” Herrera told reporters in Phoenix on Saturday. “We have the obligation to win. We are focused and committed as a team on improving and playing well. Every day can be more difficult, but we must be prepared as the demands increase.”
