Susan Sarandon Admits She Was Denied White House Security Clearance at Tribeca Talk With Michael Moore

Actress Susan Sarandon sat down with filmmaker Michael Moore yesterday at the Tribeca Talks series, and the pair discussed domestic surveillance and whether the UK phone hacking scandal could eventually spread to US shores.

The scandal rocked British news media when it culminated with the closure of the country’s News of the World paper after 168 years, but Moore said during the talk with Sarandon that he did not believe that the extent of the hacking stopped across the pond.

Joking to Sarandon that he can’t “believe it just happened in Britain, because really who cares about what’s happening over there,” Moore predicted that eventually it will come to light that the practices were not limited to British entities in Rupert Murdoch’s empire, and that he guesses that American agencies were engaging in the illegal data-collecting methods as well. Moore prognosticates:

“I’ll make a prediction about something – I think the phone hacking thing Murdoch is involved in… is going to be investigated, and it will be found that it’s been going on here too. I just have a gut feeling.”

Susan Sarandon spoke a bit about surveillance and intelligence as well, and said that she herself has been subject to investigation and that she was even denied clearance to visit the White House. The Oscar-winning actress says:

“I’ve gotten my file twice… I know my phone was tapped. If they’re not surveilling you, then everyone else has cameras on phones. I was denied security clearance to go to the White House, and I don’t know why.”

The left-leaning actress and director also discussed voter suppression, unions and the coming election. You can view the page for the Tribeca Talks panel with Susan Sarandon and Michael Moore here.
