In the new series, Supergirl, or Kara Zor-El by her birth name, came to earth around the same time as her cousin Kal-El to escape the destruction of Krypton, and was likewise raised by human parents until she was old enough to join the superhero workforce.

The Supergirl plot and much of what has been released to tease the show’s premiere has left many fans wondering how Superman fits into this universe and how his presence will affect Supergirl in her own mission. Superman does make a brief appearance in the Supergirl series pilot, though his image is blocked by the sun’s rays, giving the Man of Steel a more enigmatic presence.

When asked about the issue of including Supergirl’s older cousin in the series, Supergirl executive producer Ali Adler replied that the situation would be similar to what has been done on HBO’s Veep, which establishes the President of the United States as an unseen character.

“Our prototype is the way the president is seen on Veep. It’s certainly [inspired by] so much of what Julia-Louis Dreyfus’ character goes through. Ultimately, this is a show about Supergirl and we really want to see it through her lens.”

Meanwhile, attendees to the San Diego Comic Con were granted a special privilege: the first viewing of the Supergirl pilot and, in spite of fierce internet criticism following the announcement of the planned series in May, Supergirl received an overwhelmingly positive response.

“We just finished the #Supergirl pilot @ #SDCC: I’m absolutely speechless. Three quick non-spoiler-y thoughts about it so here goes: (1/4),” began The Flash Podcast’s response. “1) the #Supergirl pilot is another reminder that @RapaportCasting deserves an Emmy & then some, for all his work on these shows. (2/4).”

“2) as a origin story to a great superhero, you are going to LOVE what @AliAdler @GBerlanti @AJKreisberg has set up in #Supergirl (3/4),” continued The Flash Podcast. “3) – another new icon for this generation has arrived, her name is @MelissaBenoist – #MelissaBenoistAbsolutelyIsSupergirl #Supergirl (4/4)”

Fans and critics alike responded with intense enthusiasm as they raved about the Supergirl pilot via Twitter.

Supergirl pilot was (forgive me) super! Legends of Tomorrow looks really great. And your dad is probably going to love Blindspot,” another user tweeted.

It seems that Supergirl is poised to succeed with a growing army of fans already backing the fledgling series.

Supergirl premieres on October 26 on CBS.
