Tickets are $1 each, but you can pay an extra $1 to add the Megaplier and multiply the amount of the non-jackpot prizes by as much as five times.
Tonight’s $96 million jackpot isn’t the biggest in the history of the game, but it’s still enough to pay off your bills and make life comfortable. The biggest jackpot ever awarded in the popular lottery game was a $656 million grand prize given away on March 30, 2012. Three people split the massive jackpot, with winning tickets sold in Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland.
If you don’t win the jackpot, there is always a chance that you will win a non-jackpot prize that ranges from $1 to $1 million. In the last drawing on July 3, there were over one million ticket holders who cashed in on non-jackpot prizes. One ticket holder won $1 million for having five numbers (no Mega Ball), and 19 people won $5,000 each for matching four white balls and the Mega Ball.
The cash value of the July 7 jackpot is $56,700,000. According to USA Mega, the one-time lump sum payment would be approximately $42,525,000 after federal taxes, but before state taxes are taken out. Mega Millions jackpot winners can also choose a 30-year annuity — the yearly payments would be for approximately $3.2 million before any federal or state taxes are deducted.
