New Super Mario Bros. 2 Announced, Arriving This August

During the Nintendo Direct livestream last night, the company announced that a New Super Mario Bros. 2 is in the works, and it’ll be headed to a Nintendo 3DS near you this August.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was initially only announced for a release in Japan in August, but Nintendo of America promptly confirmed that an August release date is also being targeted for North America, right alongside the Japanese release.

The New Super Mario Bros. 2 announcement was a little lacking in the details department, but Nintendo was kind enough to fill in a few details, albeit vague ones, in a press release.

“New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a traditional side-scrolling adventure game featuring Mario, Luigi and loads of other favorite characters from the popular Mario series,” the company said in a press release. “The game was created specifically as a pick-up-and-play experience that can be instantly enjoyed by players of all skill levels on the Nintendo 3DS system.”

In addition to that, Nintendo confirmed that one of its other beloved franchises, Kirby, will be getting some love this year as well. This year will mark Kirby‘s 20th anniversary, and so Nintendo plans to celebrate by offering a compilation disc for the Wii.
