No matter your age, girls just want to have fun: at the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday celebration, Melanie Griffith and Kris Jenner took an opportunity to snap a selfie with the Dalai Lama — except the photo is of Griffith and the back of the Dalai Lama’s head. Fans are wondering why Griffith and Jenner didn’t just ask for a photo op with the spiritual leader, reports the Huffington Post.

Jenner posted the photo on her Instagram account, captioning the impromptu snap: “I think @melanie_griffith57 is a little excited to meet His Holiness The Dalai Lama…#turnaroundlookbehindyou #greatmorning #MelanieGriffith.”

Griffith and Jenner were at an 80th birthday bash thrown for the Dalai Lama. The celebration drew in 18,000 party goers, including celebrities such as the Today show co-anchor Ann Curry, who was the master of ceremonies at the Dalai Lama’s birthday party, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“He has loved us. Today is our chance to show him that we love him back,” said Curry of the Dalai Lama.

In their selfie, Griffith’s mouth is wide open, in apparent shock that she’s in the same room with the Dalai Lama. Jenner looks off to her right. Griffith wore a red blouse with bows to the party, with an up-swept hair style.

Although some fans of the Dalai Lama were unhappy with the amount of speakers at the celebration, interrupting one speaker with an emphatic, “Let his holiness speak!”, the party was attended by several luminaries who wanted to wish the spiritual leader a great day.

One attendee who grew up a Tibetan exile, however, explained that the Dalai Lama isn’t just a spiritual leader.

“He’s much more than what I can explain. He’s like God to us. It’s hard for [her children, all named after the leader] to fathom what I mean. If they see him and hear his wisdom… it’s an important part of being a Tibetan.”

After the sneaky snap of Griffith and the back of the Dalai Lama, Kris took another photo of her and Griffith outside the party, this time captioning the selfie “”An amazing morning with@melanie_griffith57 meeting His Holiness The Dalai Lama… #BFF’s#takethisoffmybucketlist #blessed,” reports People magazine.

The Dalai Lama himself is known to not be opposed to taking a selfie — which makes it even odder that Griffith and Jenner wouldn’t just try to get a photo with His Holiness.
