‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ Coming To Netflix — See Fan-Made Trailer Here [Video]

A mysterious YouTube user, taking the name Eleanora Poe, uploaded a professional-looking teaser for an upcoming Netflix adaptation of A Series Of Unfortunate Events. There are no official announcements connecting the trailer to the streaming service, but speculation is already flowing through the Internet.

The gothic noir children’s book series centers on the three children (Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire), whose wealthy parents die in a fire. The kids go to live with their uncle, Count Olaf, who schemes and plots to get the children’s inheritance — which can’t be accessed until the oldest orphan reaches adulthood.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events was adapted for the big screen in 2004, when Nickelodeon combined the first three books into a film starring Jude Law, and Jim Carrey as Count Olaf. The film was a success, but some fans of the original 13-book series felt it was lacking. As the Verge explained, it was “mostly just weird and hurried.”

Likewise, the movie seemed to promise that sequels were on the way, but the studios never delivered. Once author Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler’s pen name) completed the series in 2006, it appeared to be the end.

That might help explain why fans are scrutinizing the new 35-second trailer, hoping Netflix will reintroduce A Series Of Unfortunate Events to the screen.

According to Mashable, Easter eggs include dirty, eye-decorated dishes from Count Olaf’s house covered in maggots — presumably after the Baudelaire orphans made pasta puttanesca in Book 1, a blood-sucking leech from Lake Lachrymose — the setting in Book 3 — the book, How to Start Fires, placed on a pile of nondescript books (arson was a running motif in the series), and multiple snippets from the Daily Punctilio, showing headlines about the Baudelaire’s parents tragic demise.

Careful fans have noticed tidbits from all 13 books, meaning the TV series may go well past the unfortunate events covered in the movie.

Another little hint is the YouTube uploader herself, Eleanora Poe, who was the editor of the Daily Punctilio in the series. The user joined early last month, seemingly just to leak this trailer.

Netflix has not confirmed any connection, but the typewriter in the end indicates that this is an advertisement from the streaming service, cleverly disguised and tucked away on YouTube.

Netflix first announced the adaptation of A Series Of Unfortunate Events back in November, 2014. CNet reports that no cast members are attached yet, and the show isn’t set to debut until 2016.
