Can ‘Pitch Perfect’ Continue To Attract Fans With The Announcement Of ‘Pitch Perfect 3’?

Pitch Perfect 2 has so far raked in $250 million at the box office. But with the announcement of Pitch Perfect 3 being in the works, will fans continue to rush to this franchise?

Pitch Perfect 2 once more follows acapella group, the Barden Bellas, as they fall from grace — or, more specifically, Fat Amy (played by Aussie actor and comedian, Rebel Wilson) splits her pants as she descends from the roof, exposing her nether regions to the entire audience — and then have to redeem themselves at the International Acapella Championships being held in Copenhagen. It is an event that no American team has ever won.

While Pitch Perfect 2 is not quite as good as the first installment, it still offers up plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Yet fans are already wondering if it can it maintain momentum into a third installment.

Fans witnessed basically the same format from Pitch Perfect and into Pitch Perfect 2. The Barden Bellas are the underdog that shines through and defeats the opposition. It worked extremely well in the first, and succeeded once again in the second, although, many reviewers are not sure if really did translate well the second time. And therein lies the problem, franchises work and fail upon the same property: reproducing what the audience anticipates. While some of the humor in Pitch Perfect 2 sustained, there were moments when Pitch Perfect 2 already looked like it was following in the footsteps of franchises such as Police Academy and tiring very quickly.

With the creative genius of Elizabeth Banks at the helm and Kay Cannon potentially joining Pitch Perfect for a third time, chances are, they just might be able to pull Pitch Perfect 3 through to another box office success. However, there is no guarantee that Elizabeth Banks will return to the director’s seat — or in her iconic role of Gail, the acappela host who bounces off co-host, the ever sexist John (played by John Michael Higgins). While IMDb has Banks listed as a member of the cast for Pitch Perfect 3, The Hollywood Reporter states that Elizabeth Banks is still in negotiations for Pitch Perfect 3. A Universal spokesperson declined to comment to the L.A. Times on the status of Pitch Perfect 3.

For many fans of the Pitch Perfect franchise, the movie is more than just the sum of its humor and story line. It is more about the female empowerment and the positive body image offered by Fat Amy that is drawing in many fans. Considering most movies draw in beautiful thin female actors, Fat Amy with her abundantly optimistic attitude, and plus-sized body is a welcome change from the stereotypical super thin actresses normally on offer.

So, with Pitch Perfect 3 still in negotiations, it will be interesting to see just how many fans are looking forward to another installment in this franchise.

Pitch Perfect 3 is slated for release on July 21, 2017.
