‘Dragon Ball Super’ Premieres To General Acclaim, Episode 2 Spoilers

As the Inquisitr has previously reported, Dragon Ball Super, the long-awaited, Toriyama-written sequel to Dragon Ball Z, was set to premiere today. Fans met the date with mixed feelings; incredible anticipation, certainly, but trepidation as well. After all, the last Dragon Ball sequel, Dragon Ball GT, was widely considered to be a disaster, and as George Lucas has proven, dedicated fans can take their favorite properties very seriously.

It was a relief to all, then, that Dragon Ball Super premiered to widespread acclaim. As Attack of the Fanboy notes, even before getting into the plot, the full HD animation is absolutely stunning, far better than that of Dragon Ball Z remaster Dragon Ball Kai, and clearly shows the time, effort and money being spent on Dragon Ball Super.

Warning: major spoilers ahead.

Plotwise, the first episode is meant to serve as an introduction to the series. Although the classic “A New Threat” discussion came up at the end of the episode, in a bit of a departure from Z‘s style it mostly showed the characters living their lives, rather than panicking over the Next Big Thing. Goku goes about the housework – sporting a fancy new blue outfit, no less. It’s nice to see some updated character designs from a series not really known for them.

There is some brief action: Goten and Trunks fight off a giant snake, but as one might imagine, it’s not exactly a contest. It seems as if this trend will hold for at least a little while; Attack of the Fanboy also reports that a preview from Weekly Shonen Jump magazine indicates that Episode 2 will primarily be a humorous focus on Vegeta, Dragon Ball‘s resident antihero bad boy. It’s been done before, but it’s always enjoyable; the Vegeta-centric episodes of Dragon Ball Z, wherein he tried to adapt to life on Earth (and failed miserably) were among its best.

Yibada expands on the Episode 2 spoilers. Allegedly, Vegeta is getting set for a family trip with Bulma and Trunks (Vegeta the family man? Does anyone else see something off with this picture?) to the pair’s delight. Unfortunately, and far more in character (and reading in between the lines of the translated quote somewhat) Vegeta spends his time obsessing over the fact that Goku is training to become stronger while he sits on the beach – and, as the cliche says, hilarity ensues.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 2 will show on Fuji TV at 9 a.m. next Sunday – and it seems that fans will be continuing to tune in.
