A body found near a lake in Southern California has been identified as Brittany Killgore. The 22-year-old woman went missing last week. Police have arrested 25-year-old Jessica Lynn Lopez on charges of first degree murder.
Lopez was found with self-inflicted wounds next to a suicide note at a Ramada Inn hotel in San Diego on Tuesday morning. The suicide note allegedly explained what happened to Killgore, as well as the location of the body. Police officers were able to use the note to track down Brittany Killgore’s body.
ABC reports that a few weeks before Killgore disappeared she had filed for divorce from her husband Cory Killgore, who was on active-duty in Afghanistan. After his wife’s disappearance, Cory said that he was returning home to search for his wife.
According to CBS, police are also investigating Louis Ray Perez who may have been the last person to be seen with Killgore before she went missing. At the moment, Perez is considered a person of interest. Perez was arrested on Sunday for an unrelated charge. He is currently being held in San Diego Central Jail on $500,000 bail.
Lt. Larry Nesbit of the San Diego Sheriff’s Office said:
“Mr. Perez was not cooperative or what we felt was fully forthcoming in his interview… He’s being actively investigated for this murder.”
Police are not sure what relationship Perez had with Killgore but believe that he was the last person to see her alive. One of Killgore’s neighbors told ABC that she had been cheating on her husband while he was stationed in Afghanistan. The neighbor, who could not identify the man, said:
“She has been unfaithful to him. She has just been doing her own thing and telling everyone that she is getting a divorce.”
Police said that Cory Killgore is not a suspect in the case.
