NFL’s Michael Sam Split From Fiancé Hours After Supreme Court Ruling [Video]

America’s first openly gay football player, Michael Sam, has reportedly split from his fiancee, Vito Cammisano, after being engaged for just six months. The pair, who had been together since 2011, split and ended their engagement just hours after celebrating the landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court to legalize gay marriage nationwide.

According to the Spreadit, Sam has deleted all his photos of his former fiancé from his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Michael and Vito met in 2011, when the pair attended the University of Missouri together, and became engaged in January, 2015, during a trip to Vatican City, where Michael proposed in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. In 2013, Michael Sam became the first football player in American history to announce he is openly gay.

Cammisano, also an athlete who was on the University of Missouri swim team, supported Sam during his Dancing With The Stars campaign during the show’s 20th season, pumping up Michael’s support on social media.

All reports indicate that before the split, Michael Sam intended to marry Vito, and said, when asked about the U.S. Supreme Court decision, “I’m just happy that I can get married and it would be legal,” reports the Spreadit. Since that interview, Sam’s ex has been spotted several times without his engagement ring.

According to Hollywood Life, Cammisano has started a video blog and shared an Instagram video about it a week ago. In the video, he isn’t wearing his engagement ring, a sure sign the pair have split. He also tells his viewers, “I also want to talk about some issues that I might be having,” indicating it might be about the split.

Michael Sam caused a stir in NFL circles when he briefly left the Montreal Alouettes training camp for undisclosed “personal reasons.” Sam left for two weeks, and as previously reported by the Inquisitr, according to the Canadian Football League website, “the Als placed Sam on their suspended list to retain his rights in case he returns.”

“I think [Michael Sam] needed a break,” head coach Jim Popp told the Guardian. “That’s my personal belief. I think it was just overwhelming to some degree, and he needs to clear his mind, clear his head. Do I think he wants to play? Do I think he wants to be on the field? Do I think he wants to be Michael Sam the football player? I, 100 percent, believe that. Yes.”

Although there has been no statement regarding Michael Sam’s reasons for needing the break, fans now speculate of the personal matter he needed to attend to had something to do with his split.
