‘Never Open The Door’ Horror Homage Premiere, Trailer Details

Never Open the Door is here from director Vito Trabucco, who made a nice red splash with his previous effort Bloody Bloody Bible Camp.

While that was an irreverent and graphically violent slasher, his latest effort attempts a somewhat more low-key approach, paying homage to classic Twilight Zone and Outer Limits episodes in the feature-length format.

The film premiered on June 25 and 26 at the Super Geek Film Festival in Miami, Florida, Fangoria reports.

The plot centers on a group of friends who are enjoying their Thanksgiving in a secluded cabin. Then, a stranger comes to the door, severely sick and wounded. When they let him in, he spews blood on one of the friends. Before dying, he warns, “Never open the door.”

After that, the friend, who is covered in blood, disappears and the five remaining believe a killer is on the loose.

The movie was made in 2011, according to the YouTube page, but it is just now finding its way out into the public. While I’m not certain about it just yet, Trabucco’s Bloody Bloody Bible Camp was more fun than it should have been, and he appears to nicely capture the feel of an old-time TZ episode.

Still a toss-up, but it’s got good backing. Here’s the trailer.

I’ve seen horror homages go either way, but if this whets your appetite for throwback horror, you might consider revisiting two other classics that dig in to the 1980s slasher craze — The Sleeper and House of the Devil.

House of the Devil is the more well-known of the two. From director Ti West, it came out in 2009, but looked like it was ripped straight out of 1982. The story itself isn’t a slasher, but it sure feels like one.

The Sleeper goes one further and actually mimics classics of the sub-genre like When a Stranger Calls and He Knows You’re Alone. It was even released in a limited edition VHS in 2012.

The slasher film seems to be the sub that most horror auteurs return to the most whenever paying tribute, so the decision to make Never Open the Door go back even further is a risky and interesting one.

What did you think of Trabucco’s previous work, and are you looking forward to Never Open the Door? Sound off in the comments section.
