Greg Monroe To New York Knicks? NBA Rumors Have Monroe Leaving Detroit Pistons

Greg Monroe could head to the New York Knicks via free agency. The rumors about Monroe suggest that he is done with the Detroit Pistons and hasn’t even scheduled a meeting with the team during free agency. A report from NBC Sports on Saturday, June 27, indicates that he has scheduled meetings with four or five teams, and that one of those teams is the Knicks. There are a number of teams that could use a good center, meaning Monroe could find himself a hot commodity during the NBA offseason.

The other teams that Monroe will meet with have not been made official, but it is rumored to include the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. Both teams need an improvement in the low post, and the pure size that Monroe possesses could be a big boost for either franchise. It might also make sense for the San Antonio Spurs to explore what it would cost to lure Monroe down to Texas. Despite all the teams wanting him, it may be too early to rule out the Pistons as well. Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy weighed in with his opinion of the big man.

“We want Greg back, we want Reggie [Jackson] back. Again, they all have decisions to make in the whole thing. Our decision process will obviously be what to offer and all of that, but we want those guys back. And then we’ve got to talk about all of our other guys, too.”

During the 2014-15 NBA season, Greg Monroe played 69 games for the Detroit Pistons, with 57 of them being starts. He averaged 31.0 minutes, 15.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. Monroe has never been great at blocking shots, but having a big man who can average a double-double every night is something most NBA teams want. Having just turned 25, Monroe also has a lot of basketball left in his career if he can remain healthy.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, there are quite a few NBA free agents getting linked to the New York Knicks, including Paul Millsap, David West, and even DeAndre Jordan. The team needs to add some size on offense and defense, which is also not a secret around the league. With Greg Monroe, the team would certainly have someone who can get it done on the low post. That would help out Phil Jackson quite a bit as he tries to move this franchise in a different (successful) direction.
