While you wait for the Saturday night’s numbers to be drawn, don’t forget to sign your ticket. According to Forbes, it’s one of the most important things you can do after you purchase a Powerball ticket.

“A lottery ticket is a bearer instrument, she explains, meaning that whoever signs the ticket and presents a photo ID can claim the prize. So if you haven’t signed the ticket and it blows out of your hand while you are waiting for a bus, or if you show it to a buddy in a bar and accidentally leave it on the counter, you’ve lost the loot.”

If your ticket turns out to be the jackpot winner, you will have to choose between a lump-sum payment or a 30-year annuity. According to USA Mega, if you decide to take all of your money at once, you will get a check for approximately $31 million before federal and state taxes are taken out. If the annuity turns out to be a better option for you, expect an annual check for $1.6 million before taxes, with the first payment issued shortly after your ticket is verified.

Powerball tickets are sold in 44 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings that are held on Wednesday and Saturday nights at 10:59 p.m. ET.
