Why Did Rose McGowan’s Agent Fire Her?

Rose McGowan says that she was fired by her agent last Wednesday. While Innovative Artists has not confirmed the firing exactly, an anonymous source with the company did state that the actress was no longer represented by the firm. According to the actress, it was all over her tweet last Wednesday, where she publically shamed Adam Sandler and the whole of Hollywood for its “sexist” nature.

The Charmed actress shared a snippet from a casting call for an audition she was offered. McGowan explained that she was instantly offended, and just had to show the sexist nature in her industry. She was angry that it had passed through so many hands, but things were not picked up. The New York Time states that, for many people in Hollywood, this type of thing is just acceptable and expected; that includes for many women. Rose’s snippet of the casting call included the request for all women to show up in black tank tops, showing cleavage. It even stated that push-up bras were encouraged. However, recently, men like Sandler have been able to turn up to auditions with a “just out of bed” look, without any complaints from directors and casting agents. There is, reportedly, a double standard that some women want to remove from their profession.

According to Entertainment Weekly, she recently gave an interview where she shared tips given to her when she was just 17 years old and trying to break into the industry. She was informed that she needed long hair. The idea was to get men to want to be with her, and she says that is something else that angers her.

“I was offended by the stupidity more than anything. I was offended by the fact that went through so many people’s hands and nobody red flagged it. This is normal to so many people. It was probably even a girl that had to type it up. It’s institutionally okay.

–Rose McGowan about the casting call.

“When I did my first film, I was told by my agent that I would need to have long hair so men in this town would want to f— me and hire me. That was said to a 17 year old.”

The tweets sparked debate between many people on social media. For many, they said that Rose McGowan has a double standard herself. When she was dating Marilyn Manson, she would regularly appear on the red carpet in barely nothing, and now she has a problem with push-up bras. However, it is worth pointing out that the red carpet appearances were her choice and occurred when she was much younger. She is angry that, in a world where there is supposed to be equality in the work place, it is clear that it does not happen in Hollywood.

Rose has tried to focus on equality more in her own projects. Her directorial debut, Dawn, is something that she is extremely proud of happening. One thing she says is that fathers want to see the movie with their daughters, and do things differently with them. That positive response helps to counter some of the sexism for Rose McGowan when it comes to acting.
