‘Lifeguard’ Reportedly Watches As Boy Nearly Drowns, Calls 911 To Revive Him

A Dekalb County, Georgia, “lifeguard” is in hot water for refusing to administer CPR when a teenage boy nearly drowned. According to 11 Alive, he, instead, opted to call 911 frantically asking for help. The lifeguard’s actions have not only sparked outrage, but raise questions about whether or not he even knew how to revive the teen.

It has been reported that the 14-year-old — identified as Brionne Sloan — had been swimming in the deep end of a pool when he went under. It is still unclear how or why he ended up unconscious, but, apparently, the lifeguard panicked during a state of emergency. Another swimmer noticed Sloan and struggled to pull him from the water.

According to EMS-1, several 911 calls were made from the Browns Mill Family Aquatic Center in Dekalb County on Monday, June 22 — one from the lifeguard and a number of other calls from bystanders who stated that the lifeguard did not make an effort to perform CPR.

The frantic guy, who identified himself as a lifeguard, stated that the boy was unconscious and they were unable to wake him up. The operator informed the lifeguard that someone else had called in and was given CPR instructions.

911 Operator: “Hold on with us one moment, Sir.”

Lifeguard: “Ma’am, we do not have time, ’cause this man is unconscious, we cannot get him to wake up.”

911 Operator: “One of your other people are there talking with the 911 operator giving someone CPR instructions, okay?”

The swimmer who pulled Sloan out of the water reportedly performed CPR and was able to resuscitate him. Sloan was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. On Wednesday, June 24, he began breathing on his own again.

Doctors are expecting Sloan to make a full recovery over the next three weeks. There were reportedly no signs of brain damage or any other type of injuries. Local news outlets have contacted USA Pools, the private pool management company contracted to employ lifeguards for the aquatics center. However, the company has yet to respond in regards to the near-drowning incident.
