‘Humans’: AMC’s Eerie Human-Like Robot TV Series Makes ‘Stepford Wives’ Seem Tame, Premieres Sunday

Humans is a bizarre new TV show that is set to make its debut Sunday night on AMC. Humans is a U.S. remake of the British TV series Real Humans. This version of Humans seems to be more aesthetically appealing and more straightforward and detail-oriented. Too, the dialogue is better, and the characters are more developed. According to Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Humans is produced by American Movie Classics, Channel 4, Kudos Film and Television, and Matador Film AB. Yesterday, the Inquisitr reported on another new TV series entitled Mr. Robot that aired on the USA Network.

Somewhat reminiscent of the 1975 movie The Stepford Wives, AMC’s Humans is a sci-fi thriller that centers around the strange world of human-like robots who’ve been created to work as servants, catering to a person’s every need. In the first episode, we meet Joe, a hardworking husband who seeks to make life easier for his wife, Laura, who is often overwhelmed with domestic duties. Wanting to spend more time with her, he brings home a Synth named Anita, a human-like robot designed to perform domestic duties that Laura doesn’t have time to complete. But their home life becomes stressful as the Synth performs her household duties perfectly — making Laura question whether or not this new robot is going to end up replacing her.

Humans brilliantly captures the reality that modern technology is developing so rapidly that it is taking us in new and sometimes uncomfortable directions. Producer Chris Fry acknowledges that technology “is running away with us as human beings.”

The producers want the viewers to see Humans as something real, something that could be lurking just “around the corner,” and not seen as just mere entertainment for those who have a fascination with all thing futuristic. Though the idea of having a robot servant at your beck and call is somewhat enticing, most would find it eerie to look into the eyes of machine that looks like a human.

And sadly in today’s world, the artificially intelligent robot would most likely be used to commit all sorts of crimes. As for AMC’s Humans, there is no word on whether or not the synthetics, aka Synths, will explore sexual or romantic situations in the new television series.

Don’t forget to set your TV’s to AMC Sunday night at 9/8 central. Here is a breakdown of some of the key cast members that you can expect to see.

The show stars Tom Goodman as Joe Hawkins, the man who buys Anita, the Synth, for his wife, Laura; Katherine Parkinson as Laura Hawkins, the wife who has a problem with the whole concept of buying a synth; Gemma Chan as Anita, the almost-human Synth who is willing to do any and everything to please her new master; Colin Morgan as Leo, a strange man who is on the run; and Danny Webb as Hobb, another strange man who is set on revealing “the secret.” The rest of the cast includes William Hurt as Dr. George Millican, the man who created the first Synth but refused to part with an older model. Will Tudor plays the part of Odi, the older, outdated Synth, and Rebecca Front portrays Vera, the “elder-care” Synth.
