Motorcyclist Head-On Crash Captured On His GoPro Camera [Video]

Jesse Lopez is lucky to be alive. On April 1, he was out riding his motorcycle while wearing a GoPro camera. Lopez crashed into a vehicle from the Los Angelas fire department. The motorcyclist’s head-on crash was captured on the GoPro camera that was attached to his helmet. Lopez was riding his motorcycle with a friend on Glendora Ridge Road in Angelas National Forest. Lopez veered too far into the opposing lane of traffic while he was maneuvering around a corner that did not offer him a full view of the oncoming traffic.

Footage from this video may be considered disturbing to some viewers.

Lopez spoke with NBC News about the terrifying crash.

“I don’t remember what happened due to memory loss, but I might have panicked when I saw the truck. So I applied the front brake, which straightened me out and I went straight toward the truck, which was also moving probably about 35 mph.”

The firefighters who were driving the vehicle that Lopez crashed into immediately stopped to begin treatment. The injuries to Lopez were so severe that he was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. The injuries sustained by Lopez in the head-on collision included a broken femur, tibia, fibula, ulna, and humerus.

The video of the head-on crash has gone viral on YouTube. Lopez uploaded the video to the website last month. In the comments, Dave Benjamin feels that Lopez did not know what he was doing.

“This accident is 100% due to the rider entering the turn too fast and not being able to control the path of his bike. It’s obvious the guy never learned to ride because in the minutes leading up to the crash, he does not do any counter-steering going into the turns.”

Motorcyclist safety is always a hot topic when the weather becomes nice. According to the United States Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a motorcyclist is 35 times more likely to have a deadly accident on the road compared to people traveling in cars. Motorcycle accidents account for 11 percent of all traffic accidents in the United States. Wearing a helmet can save the life of a motorcyclist. It has been estimated that wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle can reduce the risk of death from a motorcycle crash by approximately 37 percent.

A head-on crash with a motorcycle is one of the most dangerous types of crashes for riders. It is important to share the road and be aware that a motorcyclist could be right around the corner.
