‘Driveclub PS Plus Edition’ Launching Tomorrow, Players Will Slowly Be Brought Online

It was originally planned as part of the PlayStation 4 launch, and then later for the delayed Driveclub launch. Now a year and seven months later, Driveclub PS Plus Edition is finally launching for the console. Sony is going to be ultra-cautious, though, with its release to avoid the multiplayer issues that plagued the full game at launch.

You can tell that Sony is taking the launch of Driveclub PS Plus Edition seriously, because World Wide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida made the announcement on the PlayStation Blog and explained how the racing title will be deployed. The game will be launched with only the offline mode available first. Online multiplayer will then be slowly rolled out to players.

“Starting on Thursday, all PlayStation Plus members can download Driveclub PS Plus Edition and begin playing the offline mode,” Yoshida explained. “Also starting Thursday, we will be rolling out online access to the Driveclub PS Plus Edition and will steadily bring more and more players online while continuously ensuring that all game systems are running smoothly.”

“We know that this might be frustrating after your extra wait already, but hope you can understand that we are taking extra precautions to protect your experience when you do get online,” he continued. “We want to make sure we don’t overload the servers as we invite millions of PS Plus members to download the game tomorrow.”

Driveclub struggled when it launched in October, 2014, due to server issues. This forced the delay of Driveclub PS Plus Edition because a flood of free players hitting the already-troubled servers would have been asking to make a bad situation worse. Yoshida apologized for the launch and developer Evolution Studios hammered away at the code to get the servers in a more stable position today so that the free version can launch.

Driveclub PS Plus Edition (PS4)

As the name suggests, a PlayStation Plus subscription is required to download Driveclub PS Plus Edition from the PlayStation Store. It was previously announced to come with access to eleven tracks set in India, ten cars, and full access to both online and offline gameplay modes. We’re awaiting confirmation that Thursday’s launch will contain the same content or something different.

“Thank you to everyone who has stood by Driveclub during the past year and for everyone who has accepted the extra wait for the PS Plus Edition and the companion app which will come after,” Yoshida wrote in his PS Blog closing. “The team at Evolution Studios is working incredibly hard to make Driveclub great for you, to get everyone to have fun racing in clubs and continue the evolution of the game with spectacular updates every month. I can’t wait to see all of you enjoying the game online together.”
