WWE News: Update On John Cena Vs. Kevin Owens — Next Match To Have Major Stipulation Added To It?

There has been no better storyline in WWE over the past several months than John Cena vs. Kevin Owens. The two men continue to have the most compelling segments on television every week, and they’re backing up all of their talk by having incredible matches with one another, most notably their match at this past Sunday’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view, where John Cena came out on top.

Apparently, WWE is planning to have Cena and Owens face off two more times — once at July’s Battleground show and again at August’s SummerSlam. Both presumably will be for John Cena’s United States Championship.

Owens — who is set to defend his NXT Championship against Finn Balor on July 4 in Japan — will likely lose the NXT Championship next month, and there is some talk of having John Cena interfere in the match. This will cost Owens the title because WWE wants to get the NXT Title off of Owens due to his main roster call up, but they don’t want him to lose clean to Balor. Furthermore, WWE is planning on putting the United States Championship on Owens at some point this summer, and they don’t want him to have both the NXT Title and the U.S. Title.

There’s some talk of adding a major stipulation to the Owens vs. Cena match at SummerSlam, but there’s been no hints at exactly what that stipulation will be. Over the past couple of years — especially in matches involving John Cena — stipulations never seem to pay off. However, it’s likely that because WWE is trying to make Owens a legitimate main-even superstar, they’ll make sure that the match stipulation pays off unless the stipulation is that the loser gets fired.

There have been some rumors of WWE planning a Kevin Owens vs. Brock Lesnar match that will take place at SummerSlam. However, that seems unlikely because WWE is going to do their best to keep both Lesnar and Owens strong going into next year’s WrestleMania 32 as they’ll both be involved in big matches. Also, whether Lesnar wins the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Battleground or not, it’s looking like he’ll end up facing Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.

Cena — who missed this past Monday’s RAW — is expected to return to WWE television next Monday night to begin building his next match with Kevin Owens at Battleground. It’s also expected that their next match will be for the United States Championship and that they’ll announce their match will be a title match on Monday.
