WWE Rumor: Brock Lesnar vs. Kevin Owens Taking Place At ‘SummerSlam’?

With the biggest pay-per-view of the summer, SummerSlam drawing near, the WWE is reportedly kicking the tires on the idea of a match between Brock Lesnar and Kevin Owens at the event, according to the Wrestling Observer (via wwfoldschool).

Lesnar made his return to WWE television this past Monday, confirming that he will face the current WWE World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins for the championship at WWE Battleground. However, that event is a mere bridge in getting to SummerSlam, an event the company is looking to stack with big time names and matches.

Brock Lesnar Returns To RAW

At the current time, the company is preparing Owens, a man who has taken WWE by storm since making his main roster debut to become a staple in the main event scene. With a victory over John Cena at Elimination Chamber, Owens established himself as fixture on the main roster but he will soon become a full-time member. Therefore, the company wants to put Owens in another high profile match and there appears to be only one issue, whether or not the match will be for the WWE World Heavyweight championship.

“The latest direction for SummerSlam appears to a Lesnar vs Owens match up. It’s felt that within the inner circle of WWE that Owens is being prepared to be shot to the top of the main event scene. The only question mark is whether this match will be a title match. At present the current direction is to continue with Seth Rollins as champion through at least October. However plans can change, so Lesnar vs Owens may be for the title.”

For what it’s worth, Owens has named Lesnar as a dream opponent in the past during an interview with the Chad Dukes Wrestling show.

“As a fan him, re-signing is incredibly exciting. As a competitor, it’s even better because of the chance of getting to be in that ring with him one day is something that motivates me. I’ve been a Brock Lesnar fan since the first time I saw him. I was there when he made his debut in Montreal, the night after WrestleMania 18 and from the get go I was like, “this guy’s awesome.” I even named my dog Brock as a tribute, whatever you wanna call it, so I’m a big fan of his. The fact that he’s gonna be sticking around here for a while and gonna do great things with WWE is exciting all around but yeah I’d love to be in the ring with him.”

Kevin Owens

The NXT championship is still held by Owens and the report reiterates that Owens is expected to lose the championship to fellow NXT competitor Finn Balor at a live event on July 4 in Japan, which is set to air on the WWE Network. That move would kill two birds with one stone by taking the title off Owens and allowing him to move on to main roster full-time and allow NXT to move forward with an arguably equally popular superstar in Balor as the champion.

But NXT championship aside, as the earlier comments suggest, a potential Lesnar vs. Owens match will likely not be for the WWE World Heavyweight championship. Rollins, the current champion is expected to continue as champion through the latter part of 2015. But rumors have circulated that Rollins is set to face Triple H in a match at SummerSlam, a match that likely would have no need for the title. Also, the third and possibly final contest of Owens current feud with John Cena is rumored for SummerSlam.

Additionally, a photo has circulated depicting a Wrestlemania 31 rematch between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar for the title at SummerSlam. A lot can change between now and the day of SummerSlam but all the aforementioned matches appear to be possibilities.
