Arizona Cardinals Rumors: Team Could Hit The Trade Market For Quarterback To Replace Carson Palmer

The Arizona Cardinals are rumored to be in the market for a new quarterback, with reports that the team could be looking into a replacement for the aging and now injury-prone Carson Palmer.

The Cardinals still have Palmer under contract for the next three seasons, but he suffered a season-ending injury last year and is reaching the tail end of his career. This has led to growing speculation that the Cardinals may hit the trade market in an effort to find a younger quarterback who might take over.

This week, ESPN Insider Matt Williamson wrote that the Cardinals could be looking into Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon. Going into his third season, Glennon could offer the Cardinals hope of turning into a franchise signal caller.

Williamson wrote the following (via ArizonaSports.com).

“Last year, the Cardinals were 6-0 when Carson Palmer got the start, but just 5-5 when Arizona’s subpar backups were under center. If Glennon was the fill-in QB on last year’s team instead of Ryan Lindley and Drew Stanton, the Cardinals would’ve fared better with Palmer sidelined. If acquired now, Glennon — whose skill set mirrors Palmer’s and fits perfectly into Bruce Arians’ downfield passing attack — could learn quite a bit playing behind the 35-year-old QB. Plus, it’d be good injury insurance for the Cardinals with Palmer coming off his second major knee tear.”

But the Arizona Cardinals trade rumors may have one small problem — Tampa may not want to part with Glennon. Though the team drafted likely franchise quarterback Jameis Winston with this year’s No. 1 overall pick, they currently having nothing other than Glennon as a backup in case of injury.

Even though Glennon hasn’t been able to hold onto the starting job for the Buccaneers, he has shown to be a capable enough player to serve behind Winston this season. Unless the offer from Arizona is overwhelming, many believe the Buccaneers will hold pat.

But that hasn’t stopped other quarterback rumors surrounding the Arizona Cardinals. Last season, the Cardinals were a capable team with a very good defense, but fell apart when injuries felled Palmer and then backup Drew Stanton.

If the rumors are true and the Arizona Cardinals are in the market for a quarterback, they may be able to find another member of the class of 2013 should Mike Glennon not work out. There have been rumors that the Buffalo Bills may be dealing quarterback E.J. Manuel if he’s not able to win the starting job against veteran Matt Cassel, which could offer the Cardinals another opportunity to find Palmer’s replacement.
