Farah Ann Abdul Hadi’s Leotard Has Earned Her Criticism From Muslim Community For Being Too Revealing

Farah Ann Abdul Hadi’s leotard has earned her criticism from the Muslim community for allegedly being too revealing at the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore last week.

Despite winning two gold medals, six medals total, the Muslim gymnast from Malaysia came under fire from many people in the Muslim community because her purple leotard revealed the shape of her “aurat” (genitalia), according to the Huffington Post.

Since the incident, several Malaysian Islamic groups are requesting clothing guidelines for Muslim female athletes that are Sharia law compliant.

“Women should not be stopped from sports, but they must prioritize the Islamic codes in sports attire. Furthermore, there are many Muslim female athletes who succeed even by covering their aurat,” Roszida Kamaruddin, head of the female wing of the National Muslim Youth Association, said in a statement, according to the Malay Mail Online.

While many are condemning Farah’s attire, there are many others that are offering their support to the gymnast.

“In gymnastics Farah wowed the judges and brought home gold. In her deeds only the Almighty judges her. Not you. Leave our athletes alone,” Malaysia’s youth and sports minister tweeted.

Abdul Hadi’s fans have also created a Facebook page titled “Farah Ann Abdul Hadi For Malaysia,” which calls for “praise and support for the gold medalist. So far, 19,000 people have “liked” the page.

“A fan page to support Malaysian gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi. It was amazing performance, and she deserves praise and support,” the page’s description reads.

Abdul Hadi posted a message thanking her supporters on Sunday, June 14.

“Hello Everyone, I would just like to express my sincerest gratitude to all of you who have been supporting me. It is such an overwhelming feeling to have had such a great and positive respond from all of you. Thank you so much.

“I LOVE YOU ALL. Thank you again for all the support and words of encouragement. It means so much to me.

“I would also like to thank Josh Lim who is the creator of this page and his company Likes Before Love.com Without you I wouldn’t have known that this page even existed and have the privilege to connect with all of you wonderful people.”
