Whoopi Goldberg and Raven Symone have had polarizing opinions, which usually come up on the daily talk show The View. During The View’s Hot Topic segments, the panel discussed the controversy surrounding former NAACP member Rachel Dolezal, when it turned out she was disguising herself as a black woman.
Rosie Perez, clearly on the offense about this subject, said, “Another part that people had a problem with her is also that she was speaking to a lot of young black youths and telling them, ‘I know how you feel. I’ve been through blah, blah, blah.’ She doesn’t know. She can’t know. She can want to be part of the culture. She can want to claim, she can be black but you still won’t understand what it means to be colored in this country, unless you are.”
Both Whoopi Goldberg and Raven Symone decided to defend Rachel Dolezal during the discussion. Goldberg stated clearly where she stands on the side of the argument, saying that Rachel Dolezal is black because she “feels” that way. She even draws comparisons to trans people.
“If she wants to be black, she can be black. Look, just like people say, ‘I feel like a man, I feel like a woman, I feel like this.’ She wants to be a black woman, fine. Everything that comes with that she is prepared for. Okay.”
Raven Symone also defended Rachel Dolezal by stating, “everybody has some type of African blood inside them, and what makes a black person, just your skin?”
During the discussion, Goldberg also stated, “She definitely owned it. She’s passing as this woman for over five years. If this b***h don’t know by now what’s it’s like [to be black], she’s never going to know.”
Raven Symone also made comments based more on the aesthetic of Rachel Dolezal’s appearance. “Black women straighten their hair every day. Black women do it all the time…White women can’t do the same thing?”
As predicted, some people didn’t take these assessments very well.
