Does Grey’s Anatomy have a new McDreamy? As we know, usually when one doctor leaves the hospital, another comes in to replace him or her. That said, Patrick Dempsey’s Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd was seen as irreplaceable by the fans — especially the fans who signed the petition to bring him back on the show after the character’s shocking death.
Now it looks like Patrick Dempsey’s shoes might be filled with actor Martin Henderson. According to TV Line, the actor, who was on series creator Shonda Rhimes’ cancelled show Off The Map, is checking into Grey’s Anatomy for Season 12. Usually on Grey’s, an actor is tested on the show for a season, and then they sign a contract to become a regular.

Well, Rhimes must have confidence in how audiences will react to Martin Henderson because he’s signed as a regular for the upcoming season of Grey’s. This isn’t the first time he’s played a doctor. Henderson played Dr. Ben Keeton on Off The Map before it went off the air. The fact that this news is coming right now isn’t surprising.
Back last month, it was reported that Shonda Rhimes was looking for someone who can carry the same charisma that Patrick Dempsey brought to Grey’s Anatomy on a weekly basis.
In April, Rhimes talked about the challenge going into the 12th season without Patrick Dempsey, who was very much the leader and one of the last regulars on the show. Rhimes said it was “uncharted territory as we head into this new,” and that “The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”
After Dempsey’s departure from the ABC show, the network stated, “After 11 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we’ve been proud to be the home of ‘McDreamy’ and the ‘Mer/Der’ love story. The devotion of Grey’s fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey’s talent. ‘McDreamy’ will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.”
What do you think about Martin Henderson? Can he take on the role of a leading man on Grey’s?
