Adam Lambert And Sam Smith Bond Over Being Openly Gay In The Public Eye

It’s obvious that Sam Smith and Adam Lambert share several things in common. The powerhouse singers recently bonded, according to Lambert’s new interview with Billboard. The “Ghost Town” singer is releasing his new album in time for the summer.

Sam Smith and Adam Lambert aren’t just great vocalists who have been compared to legendary artists such as Boy George, George Michael, and Freddie Mercury. The artists are realizing that it’s not getting so lonely at the top, thanks to people’s acceptance of openly gay artists.

Lambert, whose new album, The Original High, is set to hit stores and iTunes on June 16, has received the distinction of being the first openly gay artists to earn a No. 1 album in the Billboard charts with his second album Trespassing. Sam Smith was another openly gay artist who came close. His debut album, The Lonely Hour, hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts.

Although Adam and Sam have received much praise and success since their debut, both artists have also experienced less criticism over their sexuality. Adam told Billboard that he finds that it’s not as big of a deal as it used to be when an artist came out to the world.

“We’ve commiserated on how it is to be gay in the media. But a lot has changed. People are not as hung up on it. I’d like to think that the media doesn’t sensationalize it as much, but sometimes I’m proven wrong.”

Adam Lambert also shared his thoughts about Caitlyn Jenner’s transformation and public coming out.

“The power Caitlyn has is that she can show and teach everybody what transitioning is from start to finish, and challenge people’s perceptions. It’s important to have that ripple effect into the mainstream so people can begin wrapping their heads around it and become more comfortable. Any movement in that direction is positive.”

The American Idol runner-up also talked about how he keeps his personal life private on social media, especially when it comes to his relationships. Lambert then said that he would let the world know if he ever falls in love again.

“I haven’t been in a serious relationship for a while. If I found myself in a serious, legitimate relationship, I’m sure I’d want to share it with people.”

Don’t expect Adam to pour his heart out anytime soon. The current Queen front man says he’s too busy touring and making music to settle down. That doesn’t mean that Adam doesn’t want to be in a serious relationship anytime soon.

“I don’t know what I want in relationships, which is probably the reason I’m pouring my energy into my work. I’m dating my album right now. It’s going well. We have an open relationship.”

So, what can fans expect from Adam Lambert’s new album? He already hinted that his third album is going to be a lot “darker” than his previous works. Lambert agreed when the interviewer said this album is “less camp” than the other ones.

“It definitely is. There’s definitely dramatic moments on the album but it’s done in a more grounded way. It’s not as stylised and not as theatrical.”

Don’t expect the singer to go back to the ’80s sound though. He refuses to go back to the glam rock style. Lambert left RCA in 2013 since he wanted to create his own sound.

“I’m not an ’80s guy. I don’t know ’80s music. I have a lot of respect for the label’s opinions, so I sat with the idea and started researching the time period, but it just wasn’t resonating with me. It felt forced.”

Fans are now holding out hope that Sam Smith will come out with a new album after he recuperates from his vocal cord surgery. Maybe Sam and Adam could collaborate in the future.
