Robert Pattinson Drops A Weird Pickup Line On Nicole Kidman In ‘Queen Of The Desert’ [Video]

Robert Pattinson and Nicole Kidman can be seen getting a little flirty in the trailer for Queen of the Desert, a movie based on the life of Gertrude Bell. Kidman plays Bell, a woman with a very impressive resume — she was a multi-lingual political officer, author, archeologist, mountaineer, spy, and cartographer whose knowledge of the Middle East became invaluable to the British Empire. She’s probably best remembered today for helping to set up the state of Iraq in 1921.

Robert Pattinson’s Queen of the Desert character scored his own movie long before Gertrude finally got hers. Pattinson plays T.E. Lawrence, the military officer/archeologist whose life was the focus of the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. During World War I, Bell and Lawrence were both assigned to Army Intelligence Headquarters in Cairo. Their paths would cross again at the Cairo conference led by Winston Churchill.

Since Queen of the Desert is mostly focused on Kidman’s character, Robert Pattinson doesn’t have a huge presence in the trailer that Indiewire recently shared on its website. However, in the trailer at the bottom of the page, you can catch a quick glimpse of Pattinson holding two adorable lion cubs. T.E. Lawrence also makes an awkward attempt to flirt with Gertrude Bell.

“I’m not sure the right man for you has been born yet,” he says. Luckily, Gertrude isn’t a century-old vampire patiently waiting for the right teenage companion to sweep her off her feet.

Queen of the Desert definitely isn’t a love story focused on Pattinson and Kidman’s characters. According to Variety, Lawrence even informs Bell that she’s not wife material in one scene when he asks, “Gertie, will you please not marry me?” However, steadfastly chaste Gertie does get two love interests — she falls for the charms of diplomat Henry Cadogan (James Franco), and she has an emotional affair with married British Army officer Charles Doughty-Wylie (Damian Lewis).

Queen of the Desert was directed by Werner Herzog, the mastermind behind movie marvels like Aguirre, the Wrath of God, and Nosferatu the Vampyre. Unfortunately, Collider reports that Robert Pattinson’s latest movie didn’t get the best reception when it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February. Many critics thought that it was too uninspired.

As the Inquistir previously reported, Rob’s latest movie endured a bit of casting drama early on when Nicole Kidman’s BFF, Naomi Watts, decided to exit the biopic. At the time, Watts was enduring an intense negative reaction to her role as Princess Diana in a biopic about the life of the late royal. Kidman knows how her pal feels — her Princess Grace of Monaco biopic was so soundly thrashed that it ended up becoming a Lifetime movie. Robert Pattinson should be shaking in his keffiyeh after seeing the aftermath of their attempts at portraying real-life people.

Queen of the Desert might not be the most interesting movie that you’ll ever see, but at least it has those cute lion cubs going for it. You can check out Robert Pattinson, Nicole Kidman, and their adorable kitty co-stars in the trailer for below. The film will likely hit theaters in limited release this September.
