Rapper Ice T’s Grandson Indicted In Fatal Shooting Of Roommate

The grandson of rapper Ice T has been indicted in connection with the fatal shooting death of his roommate, the Daily Mail is reporting.

Elyjah Marrow, whose father, Ice Tracy Marrow, is Ice T’s son from his early 1990’s relationship with Darlene Ortiz, was allegedly “recklessly” handling a stolen gun at his apartment in Marietta, Georgia, in June 2014. The gun went off, striking Marrow’s roommate, 19-year-old Daryus Johnson, in the chest. It is unclear how Ice T’s grandson came to be in possession of the stolen gun. Johnson later died of his injuries.

At the time, Officer David Baldwin told the Marietta Journal, in remarks made available via People, that Marrow’s carelessness led to his roommate’s injuries and death.

“Marrow was not using proper firearms safety when handling the gun. That reckless handling of the firearm is what led to Johnson being accidentally shot and eventually killed.”

During the investigation, police also found marijuana. Marrow allegedly admitted to being a “small-time” marijuana dealer, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

On June 4, a Cobb County grand jury indicted Marrow on a variety of charges related to the shooting. Those charges include involuntary manslaughter, possession of marijuana more than an ounce, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, theft by receiving stolen property, and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony reckless conduct. It is unclear why it took a jury a year to issue the indictment.

Ice T (real name: Tracy Lauren Marrow) grew up in the rough Crenshaw neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, according to Biography. After a few years getting by as a small-time criminal — dealing pot, fencing stolen property, pimping — and a stint in the Army, Ice T started gaining fame in the 1990s with his violent, politically-charged rap. As his rap career took off, Ice T also got into acting, most notably appearing in New Jack City (1991). In 2000, he scored a job on NBC’s long-running Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola.

Ice T has also appeared on reality shows here and there. His grandson Elyjah appeared with him on a few episodes of the E! reality series Ice Loves Coco.

Elyjah Marrow is currently free on bond and awaiting trial.
