Kyle Smith’s ‘GoodFellas’ Article Says Women Are Incapable Of Understanding Scorsese’s Mob Classic

Martin Scorsese’s seminal mob movie GoodFellas has its 25th anniversary this year, and to celebrate it, New York Post movie critic Kyle Smith wrote an article that has the internet up in arms. What could he have possibly written to cause such outrage among the denizens of the interweb? Kyle Smith’s GoodFellas article lists, in painful detail, all the reasons why “women are not capable of understanding GoodFellas.”

Smith’s article starts out innocuous enough, with an anecdote about the first time he saw GoodFellas, and how his then-girlfriend thought it was a “boy movie.” Kyle Smith then starts his tirade about why women could never understand GoodFellas.

“But women don’t get GoodFellas. It’s not really a crime drama, like The Godfather. It’s more of a male fantasy picture — Entourage with guns instead of swimming pools, the Rat Pack minus tuxedos.

“Women sense that they are irrelevant to this fantasy, and it bothers them.”

He continues with a comparison between Sex in the City and GoodFellas — because all women must love Sex in the City — and then ends his diatribe with “what would GoodFellas look like if it were written by a woman?”

“Meet an at-risk youth called Henry Hill. Victimized by horrific physical abuse from an early age, and traumatized by the responsibilities of caring for a handicapped brother, he fell prey to criminal elements in his rough East New York neighborhood in a time when social-services agencies were sadly lacking. At an impressionable age, he became desensitized to violence when a gunshot victim bled to death in front of a restaurant where he was working. His turn to the mafia was a cry for help — a need to find a family structure to replace the one he had never really known.

“And who would want to watch that movie?”

Naturally, Kyle Smith’s GoodFellas article has ticked off a lot of people, men and women alike, who have taken to the comments section of the New York Post, as well as to Twitter, to tell Smith exactly what they think of it.

Kyle Smith’s GoodFellas article isn’t the only bit of public sexism women — and the internet as a whole — have had to deal with recently. Early this week, Nobel prize-winning scientist Tim Hunt explained at a conference in South Korea “his trouble with girls” in mixed-gender science labs.

“Three things happen when they are in the lab. You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticize them, they cry,” he spoke to a stunned and silenced crowd.
