Dogs Pick Up Scent Of Escaped Convicts 3 Miles From Prison

The escaped convicts named David Sweat and Richard Matt have caused authorities to warn Vermont and New York residents to be on the lookout for the dangerous men, as reported by the Inquisitr. The reportedly well-endowed Matt has been called cunning and evil, reports CNN. A man named Lee Bates had that description for Matt when Bates saw Matt snap the neck of his victim back in 1997. Matt also performed actions that Lee called “beyond torture” during the 27-hour kidnapping that ended with a murder.

As such, the fact that Matt and Sweat could still be together as escaped convicts trying to evade the law has been made harrowing for residents warned to be on the lookout for the men. CNN reports that bloodhounds may have picked up on the scent of the men approximately 3 miles from the New York prison where they escaped. Food wrappers were also discovered.

A state official said the dogs picked up on some sort of a scent 3 miles away on Route 374. However, they don’t know if the hideout spot was recently vacated or not. It’s unknown how long ago the escapees were at that location. There were signs that there was some sort of bedding in the area, along with a boot or shoe print in the area. The trained bloodhounds were alerted, and Route 374 was shut down to follow up on the leads.

It’s being called a significant lead, and the expanded search for Matt and Sweat has caused blocked roads and school shutdowns, reports the New York Times?. Other searches are being conducted in conjunction with the latest leads.

Ex-prison employee Joyce Mitchell has also been questioned about her role in potentially helping the escaped convicts. There are conflicting reports stating either Mitchell was infatuated or even in love with one of the men. Certain reports state Mitchell only worked closely with the men in prison, and didn’t knowingly help them escape at all. Yet and still, Joyce is being pegged as a woman who had contact with the inmates when they worked together in the prison’s tailoring shop — even though her son says she would’ve never helped the men escape unless she was afraid of them. Mitchell reportedly allowed Matt to use her cell phone because he was interested in art.

As the hunt for the escaped convicts expands to Vermont, as reported by Yahoo News? — the big questions surround how much help they had from the inside.
