Iggy Azalea Still Haunted By History Of Homophobic Comments As Nick Jonas Steps Up For LGBT Event

Take it from Iggy Azalea: once it’s on the Internet, it’s there forever. Now the 21st century’s version of the much-maligned “permanent record” of previous generations, the Internet has proven time and again that it is the greatest repository of off-color comments and social gaffes in human history. Indeed, it’s been the downfall of big-time celebrities, pro wrestlers, and everyday folks for almost as long as Iggy Azalea has been alive. And for the 25-year-old rapper, her own comments – as recorded and propagated via social media – have proven to be a persistent drag on her public image.

Most recently, Iggy Azalea withdrew from her gig at the forthcoming Pittsburgh Pride event amid renewed controversy over some old tweets containing homophobic and racist language. As previously reported by Inquisitr, a message was posted to social media on Azalea’s behalf apologizing for the old tweets and announcing her withdrawal from the event.

Earlier today, Nick Jonas, who is perhaps best known for his part in the pop band the Jonas Brothers, announced that he’ll be taking the stage in Pittsburgh this Saturday to fill the void created by Azalea’s abrupt cancellation. According to Entertainment Weekly, Jonas approached show organizers on his own when he learned that they needed an act for the event. “When I heard about the difficult position Pittsburgh Pride was in just days before their event, I knew I had to find a way to help,” Jonas said in a statement quoted by Entertainment Weekly. “I’m excited to do what I can to support the LGBT community in Pittsburgh, and I look forward to seeing you this Saturday as we celebrate together.”

The Pennsylvania Equality Project tweeted kudos for Nick’s decision to step up and support the event, which is described as “the premier LGBT community festival in Pennsylvania.”

Even without the current controversy, Azalea’s career has hit a few rough spots as of late, including the cancellation of her North American Tour. Christy Khoshaba of LA Times recently broke down the continuing decline of Iggy’s celebrity luster via a video post that lays out Iggy’s celebrity beefs, online controversies, and related missteps.

“Hate to say it,” Khoshaba began. “But things seem to be going downhill for Iggy Azalea.”

While Iggy Azalea still has lots of commercial appeal, it’s clear that many pop culture aficionados regard her conduct as virtually unforgivable. There’s even a Tumblr page devoted to the archival of some of Iggy’s most objectionable musings, thereby keeping the ugliness in circulation for the benfit of any folks who are otherwise unfamiliar with the flap. With so much baggage and a knack for ruffling feathers, Iggy Azalea will have work hard to rise above the mistakes of her past.
