Lincoln Tunnel: At Least 18 Injured When Buses Collide [Breaking]

Two Buses collided inside the Lincoln tunnel in New York City injuring at least 18 people.

The situation is fluid in New York City as first responders reached the scene on Wednesday morning.

According to several news reports, police said one bus has rear-ended another bus in the Lincoln tunnel — which connects New Jersey with Manhattan — injuring at least 18 people.

Joe Pentangelo — with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police — says the crash happened at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, in the center tube, on the New York City side of the Lincoln tunnel.

Pentangelo said a New Jersey Transit bus hit the back of a bus operated by a private company. About 60 people were believed to be on the NJ Transit bus at the time of the accident, but none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening, Port Authority and NJ Transit officials said, according to NBC.

People were spotted walking out of the Lincoln tunnel and some were carried out on stretchers by FDNY personnel. Hospitals in the area are on standby to receive victims.

Aerial photos of the Lincoln tunnel crash posted to social media show the traffic chaos following the accident, as police try to reroute motorists through the south tube. At least one-hour delays are reported at this time and commuters trapped inside the tunnel have been at a standstill for the same time.

The Port Authority estimates approximately 42 million people travel through the tunnel each year.
