Zhao Wei: Man Sues Chinese Actress For Staring Too Intensely At Him Through TV Screen

Zhao Wei, one of China’s biggest movie stars, is being sued by a man who claims that she stares too intensely at him through the TV screen and causes him “spiritual damage.”

China has recently enacted laws, which make it harder for lawsuits to be dismissed. This regulation became effective on May 1 2015 in an attempt to make the court system less shrouded and harder for government officials to interfere with judicial matters.

“Authorities are determined to put an end to obstructive behavior by courts and officials meddling in cases,” the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

And, according to the Associated Press, this has led to an increase in court cases by 29 per cent, in comparison to last year at that time, to over one million cases – a number of which carry frivolous claims. Case in point, Zhao and her big, soulful eyes.

This new system is said to require courts to not just dismiss a lawsuit when presented with one, but to give a clear reason for rejecting whatever claim is filed. Citizens are also given the opportunity to appeal the decisions made by the court.

“Previously, it was difficult for administrative cases, such as people suing governments, to be accepted,” said Beijing lawyer, Li Heping.

This new judicial structure has led to Zhao’s lawsuit being filed at the Shanghai Pudong New District Court. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether or not the case will be accepted by the court, the AP reports.

The lawsuit against the Chinese superstar is allegedly filed by a Shanghai man who apparently felt uneasy watching Zhao and her big, super-power eyes in the prime-time TV show Tiger Mom.

The hit drama, which debuted in May, follows a divided couple who hold different approaches to raising their daughter. Zhao plays the relentless (tiger) mother who continuously pushes her daughter’s development, while the (cat) father wants his child to live a less restrictive life.

Zhao, who is also one of China’s highest paid actresses and richest celebrities, is said to be causing “spiritual damage” to the unnamed plaintiff with the influence of her large and penetrative eyes.

In a news conference on Tuesday, Supreme Court official, Gan Wen, stated that Zhao’s court case is a clear example of citizens abusing their power to file a lawsuit.

“It’s not necessary to waste our judicial resources on cases like these,” he said.
