Mary Ellen Trainor: ‘Goonies’ Mom Dead At 62


Mary Ellen Trainor, who played The Goonies mom, has died at 62. The accomplished character actress was featured in both the cult classic, The Goonies, and in the Lethal Weapon movies. Trainor was also a philanthropist. The actress began her movie career as a producer’s assistant. In 1979, she worked on the Steven Spielberg film, 1941.

The Goonies mom passed away in her home in Montecito, Calif. on May 20, according to longtime friend and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

Mary Ellen Trainor would meet her future husband Robert Zemeckis while he directed 1941. The couple married in 1980 and Zemeckis cast Trainor in her first film, Romancing the Stone. She played the kidnapped sister of Kathleen Turner’s character. Zemeckis and Trainor, divorced in 2000 and had one child, Alex Zemeckis.

Mary Ellen Trainor would go on to appear in cameos in multiple Zemeckis’s movies over the years, including Forrest Gump and Back to the Future. Trainor also portrayed a police psychiatrist in the Lethal Weapon films and a television reporter in Die Hard.

Mary Ellen Trainor’s television roles included stints on both Relativity and Roswell.

“Mare and I have been close since our days together as college roommates, and she even provided the introduction to Steven Spielberg that jumpstarted my career,” Kennedy said in a statement. “She was a great actress, warm friend and generous spirit.”

A memorial service for Mary Ellen Trainor will be held on June 19 in Montecito.
